Welcome to The Writer’s Room: A Paid Play Research & Development Program
A professional research and development program for TYA creators.
Story Theatre is committed to supporting emerging and mid-career professional playwrights and theatre creators across BC who are interested in making Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA).

The 2022-23 Writer’s Room Program will provide 3 BC-based theatre creators and/or creative collectives with space, training, and resources to use for exploring new play development and practising leadership of their own artistic processes. It is our aim to build community with artists who want to work in TYA and empower the next generation as leaders of change.
The Creator Crew Youth Board, Ez Sybom, our youth intern, and the Story team chose three artists to support through mentorship in the Writer’s Room program, as they work to develop original works for young audiences. A huge thank you to our amazing queer, neurodivergent, disabled, BIPOC Youth Board, who helped to shape the program to fit the vision of their communities!
We are pleased to announce the inaugural playwrights of the 2022-23 Writers Room:
K.P Dennis
Rain Fox
Sydney Marino

Writer’s Room 2022-23 Professional Theatre for Young Audiences Workshops
Story Theatre invited professional Theatre for Young Audience creators from all over Turtle Island to lead workshops for the Writer’s Room in October 2022. We are proud that 5 of our workshop leaders are also parents/caregivers! Like Hot Brown Honey says, “The revolution cannot happen without childcare!”
A TYA Crash Course with Izad Etemadi & Erin Michell (Toronto, Vancouver)
Touring TYA and Black History Matters with Giselle Clarke-Trenaman of Presentation House Theatre (Vancouver)
The Making of Through The Bamboo with Andrea Mapili and Byron Abalos (Toronto)
Directing and Leadership for TYA with Katie German of Junior Musical Theatre Company (Winnipeg)
Waves of gratitude to the educators and instructors who have partnered with us to support the growth of these artists in their TYA craft. We are so proud to be in community with you. We did it!
Stay tuned for the next Writer’s Room Intake!
